Men's Basketball Dominates in 91-62 Win over Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. - Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) and Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led the Eagle's offense as the University of Northwestern St. Paul defeated Martin Luther College on the road 91-62 on Saturday night.

Alm led the Eagles with 19 points and devastated the Knights from long range, splashing five three's on 50 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Kaemingk shot a remarkable 75 percent from the floor, going 6-of-8 for 17 points. Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was a force off the boards, leading the Eagles with five offensive rebounds and nine overall.

Martin Luther had a lead of six points 4:45 into the contest, but would never lead by more or for much longer. Kaemingk scored on a fast break five seconds later to cut the lead to four, and Caleb Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart High) made a free throw with 13:32 remaining in the first to tie it up at 12. Johnny Erickson (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) hit a fast break jumper 35 seconds later to give UNW the 14-12 lead, and the Eagles never looked back again.

The Eagles played well in the first half, shooting 48 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range. Nonetheless, UNW elevated their play in the second half, shooting 57 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.

Fast break points were a vital part of the Eagles success. UNW made an incredible 23 fast break points on the night. Better yet, the Eagle defense prevented the Knights from connecting on a single fast break, holding MLC to zero on the night.

It wasn't just the starters that powered the Eagles to the decisive victory. UNW scored 39 points off the bench, out-gaining the Knights by 11.

The Eagles are now 5-2, and will look to build off this commanding performance going forward. It's a quick turnaround for UNW, as up next is a road matchup with the University of Minnesota Morris on Monday, February 15, at 7pm.
