ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hosted UW-Superior in another conference match-up Thursday evening. While the Yellow Jackets lead the all-time head to head series (24-11), the Eagles controlled this one, defeating UW-Superior in high scoring fashion, 70-59.
The last time these two teams met was in the 2019-2020 season where the Yellow Jackets defeated the Eagles in the first round of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Conference Tournament. Northwestern moves to 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in the UMAC, while Superior moves to 2-1 and 1-1 in the UMAC.
Superior scored the first points of the game before Northwestern went on a nine point run. The Yellow Jackets fought their way back slowly to take their first lead of the game, 12-11. The quarter ended with Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) scoring on one of two free throws.
Superior came out strong and on a 7-2 run over the Eagles to go up 21-16. A pair of turnovers by UWS and fast break points by Northwestern brought UNW within one before they would take the lead on a Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) bucket.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) ended the half with 13 points while Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) added nine. Superiors biggest lead came by five points before UNW took the lead once again going into halftime, 34-30.
In third quarter action the Eagles began to pull away and take a larger lead on the Yellow Jackets. UNW's biggest lead came by 10 in the third on top of Superior, 45-35.
Northwestern continued to build on their lead in the fourth scoring on multiple buckets. Superior could not keep up with the Eagles scoring and tough defense. With just under three minutes left in the game, UNW had a 13 point lead on the Yellow Jackets.
Play ended with a 70-59 point win for the Eagles, their first win in conference play this season.
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) finished one point shy of her career high with 22 points. Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) had 17 points and Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) finished with 13 points. Northwestern forced 20 turnovers by the Yellow Jackets and had 14 fast break points.
UNW will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to Duluth, MN to take on the College of St. Scholastica, tipoff slated for 4:30 pm.
