Kelsea Lund Finds Stride, Leading Eagles to Win Over Northland, 80-59

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Northwestern women's basketball team hosted Northland College in Saturday's 3 o'clock game in the Erickson Center. Today's game records UNW's seventh conference matchup of the season, with this being the first time against the Jills this year. A back and fourth score to begin the game, ultimately ended in an easy 21 point victory for the Eagles, 80-59.
 
Saturday's game highlighted the seniors of the team with Coach Aaron Kahl honoring the three seniors for their commitment to the team and dedication to the game. Seniors recognized were: Jordan Sauve (Blaine, Minn./Blaine), Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) and Talia Sherry (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview).
 
The first quarter started with Northwestern winning the tip. The Eagles played a well fought first quarter ahead of the Jills. UNW scored 10 points in the paint compared to the Lumberjills four and Northwestern netted seven fast break points to the Jills zero. The Eagles ended the quarter on top 17-16.
 
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) started the second quarter with a triple from behind the arc. Offensive and defensive boards helped the Eagles break away with the lead for the rest of the game. By the end of the second quarter, Northwestern had scored 18 points off of Northland's turnovers.The quarter ended with a 13 point lead for UNW after a layup from Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) on the buzzer, 40-27.
 
Third quarter started with a three point swish from Brooklyn Dekam from three point land. The team showed their cohesive play with 14 assists by the end of the third quarter. Electric defense and communication defined the team as they led Northland by 25 points at the end of the third.
 
Northwestern's first bucket in the fourth was a drive to the lane from Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian). The entire team contributed, with 33 points from the bench.  Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the team in points with 21, Jordan Sauve (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) netted 14, while Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) and Hailey Paup (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Concordia Academy) each added 11. Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) led rebounding for the Eagles, snagging 11, while Hailey Paup (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Concordia Academy) pulled down nine. The team tallied 13 turnovers and swatted 5 shots. The Eagles won the game 80-59 making them 12-4 for the season thus far and 6-1 in UMAC play.
 
UNW Women's basketball will be back in action on Thursday night against Crown College, tip-off slated for 7 pm, for Northwestern's last home game as well as their last Conference matchup before they head into the UMAC tournament starting March 1st.
