Women’s Basketball Drops Matchup Against No.5 Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled to take on the No. 5 nationally ranked Wartburg Knights in Tuesday night's game. The Eagles fell to the Knights 79-46 and now sit at a 4-2 record on the year.

In the first quarter, it was Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley) who started off the scoring for both teams as she hit a three in the first shot of the game. The Knights would respond with their own three before taking the lead with four more threes early on in the quarter. The Eagles shot 40 percent from three point range and out-rebounded the Knights 13-9. However, Wartburg would keep the lead throughout the quarter and led UNW by a score of 22-12.

The Eagles managed to bring their deficit all the way down to eight points in the second quarter due to Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) finding a hot streak and hitting three layups in a row. The Eagles continued their domination on the boards, bringing in 16 more rebounds to Wartburgs 13.

UNW saw a lot of their offense come off the back of their 14 offensive rebounds, resulting in eight second chance points in the half. It was not enough to deter the Knights as they took a 39-23 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Eagles continued to win the board battle as they finished the game with 52 rebounds, while the Knights finished with 50. Wartburg's offense proved to be too strong as they continued to expand on their lead. The Eagles fell to the Knights 79-46.

Leading the way for the Eagles was Roberts as she finished the game with 11 points along with seven rebounds. Lexi Hagen (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) was right behind her in both categories with eight points and six rebounds. Meanwhile, Hailey Paup (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Concordia Academy) led UNW in rebounds, finishing with nine, including six offensive boards.

The Eagles have a few days to rest up as their next game will be played on Friday, December 10. They will continue their road trip as they travel to take on the Storm of Crown College at 5:30 p.m. For all things women's basketball visit www.unweagles.com or follow them on social media @unwwbb.
