PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled over to take on the Lakeland University Muskies for their first game in 11 days. The Eagles would fall to the Muskies 68-55 and now sit at a 4-3 record on the season.
It was a first quarter of runs, the Muskies would start the game going up quickly 4-0. The Eagles would respond with an 11-0 run led by
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./Lac qui Parle Valley) and
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy), as the seniors would combine for nine of the 11 points. Not to be undone, Lakeland responded with their own 11-0 run to take a 15-11 lead late in the first.
Jasmine Sondrol (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) would sink a last minute three to cut the lead to one point as the Muskies held on for a 15-14 lead after the first.
Both teams continued to add on points in the second quarter. Northwestern found themselves down by as much as seven points with two and a half minutes left in the quarter. The Eagles continued to battle back, but entered the locker rooms with a five point deficit, 35-30.
UNW forced seven turnovers in the first half, which led to seven total points off turnovers. They also took the rebound battle as they outrebounded the Muskies 19-18.
In the third quarter, the Eagles found themselves in a hole as the Muskies could not miss from the three-point line, hitting five in a row. Despite that, the Eagles kept the third quarter close as Lakeland held a 52-43 lead at the end of it.
The three-point ball continued to fall for the Muskies and it would become the main difference in the game as they shot 45 percent from beyond the arc. Despite the Eagle's best efforts, they were not able to find themselves back in front as they fell 68-55. UNW, as they do best, won the rebound game once again, bringing down 34 rebounds to Lakeland's 30.
