Men’s Basketball Falls to Falcons in Overtime

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team battled the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on the road Tuesday night. The game was a back and forth thriller that went down to the wire, but the Eagles fell in overtime 92-88 to the Falcons.
 
River Falls jumped out to an early lead before Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) made a three-pointer to that put the Eagles up 11-8. The Falcons went ahead 13-12, but UNW retook the lead at 16-15 with a jumper in the paint by an Andrew Koehler (Scandia, Minn./Chisago Lakes). River Falls hit a three to retake the lead, but Caleb Hoilien (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) answered with a three of his own to retake the lead for UNW up 19-18. The Eagles never trailed again in the opening half, leading by as many as 10 when up 33-23. The Falcons, however, rallied to cut the lead to one point before halftime as the game went into the half with UNW up 38-37
 
In the second, the lead flipped between the Eagles and Falcons 12 times. In the closing minutes of regulation, Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) hit a jumper to put Northwestern up 75-73. With just ten seconds remaining, however, the Falcons managed to make a jumper in the paint to tie the score up again at 75-75. The Eagles got the ball back with time for a shot, but were unable to land it as the contest moved into overtime.
 
Alm led off the overtime period with a jumper 10-seconds in. The senior's shot started a chain of four lead changes, but the Falcons jumped ahead 81-79 on a three-point shot. From then on, River Falls held the lead until the final buzzer, securing their third win of the season.
 
The Eagles were led once again by Alm with 29 points in the contest, shooting 11-of-26 from the field. Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) recorded seven rebounds to lead UNW. Caleb Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart High) and Jacob Masek (Shoreview, Minn./Trinity) each had three rebounds for the Eagles.
 
Up next for Northwestern is a home game against Finlandia University at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 3, in the Ericksen Center.
