Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | David Pederson

Men's Soccer Goes Into Overtime for Second Consecutive Day

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The UNW Men's Soccer team played a lot of soccer this weekend, playing in a double overtime match on Friday, and then another overtime contest on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fell to Northland 2-1 in the overtime finish.

Northland started the scoring early on with an Izaak Clarke goal in just the 12th minute. The Lumberjacks took that lead into the late stages of the game, however, there was high drama in the 81st minute. Aaron Hill (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) delivered a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School), and then found the back of the net. The game was tied at one goal apiece.

The game remained tightly contested as it progressed into overtime. The first ten minute overtime period was a mere 30 seconds from being complete before an impressive goal from Diego Castaneda ended the match in favor of the Lumberjacks.

This was a very evenly played match as the shots were very closely contested. Northwestern had 11 shots (five of them on goal) and Northland had 10 (five of them on goal). These are two teams in the conference that are fighting for UMAC Tournament contention, and it was a well-played game between two high quality teams.

Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School) had a good weekend for Northwestern, scoring two goals in two games. These were the first two goals of the season for the senior, who will look to continue to be a big part of the Eagle offense down the stretch of the season.

The Eagles will be back at home on Tuesday, October 12th when they host North Central at Reynolds Field. This will be the second matchup between the two schools in 2021. The Rams won a 1-0 match in double overtime in a game that the Eagles dominated the possession game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
