Men’s Soccer Takes UW-Superior to Double Overtime in UMAC Home Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team hosted the University of Wisconsin Superior on Friday afternoon for their first home conference game of the season. The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but eventually fell 3-2 in double overtime to the Yellowjackets.

Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) opened the scoring in the 13th minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Luke McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield High School) sent a pass up the middle through two Yellowjacket defenders to find Wesselink, who used his speed to fly by the UWS defense on the left side and fire a shot past the approaching keeper to give Northwestern the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the 39th minute of the opening half. As the Yellowjackets were moving the ball around in the midfield, Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) stepped in front of an exchange and launched a long pass up the field to Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School), who collected it between a pair of UWS defenders and fired a rocket past the diving Superior keeper and into the back of the net to put the Eagles up by two.

Down 2-0, the Yellowjackets cut the UNW lead in half in the 42nd minute with a goal by Alex Hanson. UW-Superior then tied the game in the second half as Protus Babaya scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute. The match went to overtime, and after a scoreless first frame, Babaya scored the game winner on a remarkable header off the left post into the net.

Next up for Northwestern is another home conference match on Saturday against Northland. The Eagles and Lumberjacks face off starting at 2 p.m. at Reynolds Field.
