Men’s Soccer Come up Just Short in Regular Season Closer

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team played host to Martin Luther College for a Saturday afternoon showdown. The game saw goals flying back and forth between the two teams, eventually leading to overtime.

It was Senior Day for the Eagles, who honored ten student athletes on the night. They were all recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Eagles during their time with the program.

The Eagles started the scoring late in the first half when Mitchell Pfeifer (Blaine, Minn./Avail Academy) scored his second goal of the season. UNW outshot the Knights 14-4 and headed into halftime leading 1-0.

The Knights would tie the game up quickly into the second half. Isaias Santos tied up the game in the 50th minute. It would only take the Eagles 25 seconds to take the lead right back when Pfeifer slotted in his second goal of the game, giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

Later in the 64th minute, the Knights would get a goal from Lucas Martin, tying the game up. Both defense remained stellar throughout the rest of the second half as chances for both teams came and went. Regulation came to a close with a 2-2 tie.

It was in the 93rd minute when Xander Heiman found the back of the net, ending the match in favor of the Knights.

The Eagles finished the regular season 7-9-1 overall and 6-7-1 in conference play. Northwestern will be heading over to Superior to take on the Yellowjackets in the UMAC Tournament on Wednesday, November 3rd.
