ST. PAUL, Minn.- The UNW Men's Soccer team had a strong 2021 regular season and qualified for the UMAC Tournament as the #4 seed. The Eagles traveled to Superior, Wisconsin to face off against the top seed in the tournament, Wisconsin-Superior. The top seeded Yellowjackets would win the game 5-1, ending the Eagles' season.
The Yellowjackets got off to a strong start on their home field, getting a goal from Blake Perry in just the fifth minute. Superior would add another goal in the 25
th minute, taking a 2-0 lead into the halftime break.
Goals by the Yellowjackets in the 51
st, 55
th, and 76
th minutes would give the UMAC Regular Season Champions a lead that the Eagles would not be able to come back from.
However, the Eagles refused to quit playing, and in the 86
th minute the team was rewarded with a memorable moment.
Jaron Harthoorn (Sanborn, Iowa/Western Christian), a senior, scored the first goal of his career in his final game as an Eagle. Despite the score of the match, it was a special moment for the senior and for the Eagles' squad as a whole.
Justin Ross (Midwest City, OK./Midwest City), who had a great first season with the Eagles, assisted on the goal.
Harthoorn was not the only senior making an impact in their final game on Wednesday.
John-Charles Micklich (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) got the start in net for UNW and made five saves. Fellow senior goalie,
Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View), was unable to play due to injury but had a terrific senior season for the Eagles. Gunkel had 59 saves on the season, and finished with a winning record of 7-6-1 in net.
The rest of the senior class for UNW Men's Soccer includes:
Aidan Lynch (Glendora, Calif./Western Christian),
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School),
Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn),
Luke McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield High School),
David Shoemaker (Danville, Iowa/Danville Community School),
Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School),
Titus Seland (Fergus Falls, Minn./Kennedy Secondary School), and
Ben Hatchett (St. Paul, Minn./Mukwonago Baptist).
This was a special group of seniors who did a lot on and off the soccer field for Head Coach
Greg Wheaton and his staff. UNW Men's Soccer will miss this entire group of seniors, but is excited to build off of the foundation they set in the future.
