Men's Soccer Collects Pivotal UMAC Win in Ashland

Box Score ASHLAND, Wisc.- UNW Men's Soccer traveled to Ashland, Wisconsin to take on Northland in a game that had massive implications in the UMAC standings. The Eagles entered the contest with a 5-4-1 UMAC record and in fourth place in the conference standings. The Lumberjacks were just above the Eagles in third place with a 6-4 record. Northwestern came away with an important win on the road, taking the contest 3-1.

Although things went smoothly for the Eagles in Ashland, they didn't start off that way. The Lumberjacks made a statement in this pivotal contest, scoring a goal right out of the gates. Izaak Clarke scored in the 7th minute, and Northland led 1-0.

However, the Eagles stayed calm and showed their resiliency. Goals were hard to come by for a stretch in the first half, but UNW broke through in the 35th minute. The senior, Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn), scored a much needed goal for the Eagles off of an assist from Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial). This would not be the last time McMillin would make an impact in this game.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure and would take their first lead of the game seven minutes later. Mitchell Pfeifer (Blaine, Minn./Avail Academy) came through in a big way and scored the first goal of his career and the season. The freshman picked the perfect time to make the first big splash of his career, as this goal would hold up as the game winner.

In the 50th minute, Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) provided some insurance for the Eagles. The freshman sent a ball into the box that deflected off of a Lumberjack and into the net. The Eagles would win the crucial game 3-1.

Northland had ten shots on goal, with six of them landing on net. Northwestern had eight shots, and had six of their own on target.

In addition to the offense, the Eagles also had good goalkeeping from senior Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View). Gunkel made five saves to lead the defensive effort.

The Eagles have another important game tomorrow when they square off with Wisconsin-Superior who is currently 11-1 and in second place in the conference. The Eagles kick off at 4:30pm in Superior.
