MANKATO, Minn.- UNW Men's Soccer traveled to Mankato to take on Bethany Lutheran who entered with a perfect record in UMAC play, 4-0. The Eagles and the Vikings went toe to toe and the game came down to the final ten minutes. Bethany Lutheran defeated UNW 2-1.
Strong defensive play has been the Eagles' bread and butter throughout the 2021 season, and that was on display once again on Saturday afternoon. The game remained scoreless going into the 79
th minute of play, before the Vikings finally broke through the Eagles' defense. Gianluca Trastulli scored off of a corner kick and Bethany Lutheran had the slim lead.
In the 81
st minute, Agostino Curzio scored a deep goal and the Vikings led the Eagles 2-0.
However, despite the late deficit, the Eagles refused to quit. Playing hard in the final minutes of the game, the Eagles cracked the scoring column and made it a one goal game again.
Jake Seal (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Mesa) delivered the ball in and
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) scored off of a header for his team leading fourth goal of the season. This goal came in the 84
th minute, and despite some chances to tie the game, the Eagles fell 2-1.
The Eagles played a very solid game of soccer on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball against one of the top teams in the conference. The shot totals were even as Bethany Lutheran slightly outshot the Eagles, 15-11. The shots on goal were 9-4 in favor of the Vikings.
Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) played another strong game in net for the Eagles, making seven saves. Offensively, the Eagles were very balanced.
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High),
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School),
Jake Seal (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Mesa),
Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School), and
Luke McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield High School) all had two shots.
Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) also chipped in a shot for the Eagles' offensive attack.
The Eagles have nearly an entire week to recover from this hard fought game, and will be back in action on Friday, October 8
th when they host the preseason poll favorite, Wisconsin-Superior. This game will mark the first home game for the Eagles since September 9
th, as they wrap up a long stint of games on the road.
