ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team won their third game in a row on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the Crown College Storm at Reynolds Field.
After a scoreless first half,
Joey McMillin (Hugo, Minn./Centennial) launched a free kick in the 63
rd minute towards the goal from 35 yards out on the right side of the field.
Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) tracked the ball on the left side of the box and leaped up with a Storm defender and the keeper to try and win it. Alfrey timed his jump perfectly, connecting with the pass from McMillian and headed it into the far right side of the goal, putting the Eagles up 1-0.
Northwestern extended their lead in the 87
th minute when
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) lunched a pass to the box from the far right sideline and connected with
Aaron Hill (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View), who placed a header into the right side of the net to double the UNW lead. Hill's goal was the first of his career, and would end up being the game-winner.
The Storm cut the Eagle lead in half just ten seconds after Hill's goal, but the UNW defense would hold through the final minutes as Northwestern won the conference contest 2-1.
Northwestern outshot Crown 32-2 in the contest, with 11 shots on goal to the Storms' two.
Next up for Northwestern is a trip to Northland to take on the Lumberjacks on Friday, October 22, at 3:30 p.m
