ST. PAUL, Minn.- Late game heroics have been a theme for the Eagles all season long, and that held true on Friday afternoon as UNW played host to Minnesota-Morris. The Eagles trailed by a goal late in the second half but were able to find an equalizer to force overtime, where they ended up winning by a score of 2-1.
The first half went by without anybody finding the back of the net. It was a combination of good defensive play in the field and good goaltending by each team that kept the game scoreless. Despite not being able to find a goal, the Eagles generated a lot of opportunities, outshooting Morris 12-1 in the first half.
In the second half, the Cougars struck first. Carver Hammond found the back of the net for the visitors, and for the second straight game UNW trailed entering the later stages of the game. However, for the second straight game, the Eagles stayed calm and mounted a comeback.
In the 75
th minute, the Eagles got what they were searching for. The freshman,
Alejandro Alfaro (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta), continued his excellent rookie campaign as he scored his second goal of the season. This goal was the equalizer and tied things up entering the final 15 minutes of regulation.
The game went into overtime, and Eagles fans were treated to another UNW game winning goal added to the collection this season. This time it came courtesy of
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High). Olsen had the ball on the left side of the goal with a defender playing him closely, made an explosive move back to the middle of the field, and fired a shot to the upper, opposite corner. The ball just snuck past the goaltender's outstretched arms, and the Eagles won 2-1.
The Eagles outshot the Cougars 27-4, and had 8 shots on goal to the Cougars' 3.
Having two dramatic, come from behind wins under their belt already this week, the Eagles are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Crown at Reynolds Field.
