ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Northwestern men's basketball team welcomed Martin Luther College for the first of many conference matches this season. In the Upper Midwest Athletics Conference (UMAC) preseason poll the Eagles were tabbed to come in first in the conference while the Knights came in ninth. MLC scored the first four points of the game before UNW took over, garnering their first win of conference play, 91-72.
The game began with a quick four points for Martin Luther before Northwestern tied things up. The score was neck and neck before the Eagles went on a 10-0 run to go up 22-15. Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) put together 13 points in the first and UNW out rebounded MLC 21-8.
First half play ended with Northwestern up 48-36, their biggest lead of the half.
The Eagles continued the same mentality into the second half extending their lead over the Knights. UNW had 14 second chance points while MLC scored nine.
The game ended with Northwestern shooting 57 percent from the field and 8-11 from the free throw line.
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led scoring for the Eagles with 22 points and seven rebounds. Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) added 21 for UNW and Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) had 17. An electrifying dunk by Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) sealed the deal for Northwestern in the closing three minutes of the game.
The Eagles next contest will be this coming Thursday as they head to UW-Superior for a 7 pm tip-off.
