Sam Peterson Leads Baseball to First Win of the Season

The University of Northwestern Eagles split a double header against Gettysburg College on Monday afternoon at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach, FL. Gettysburg won game one 14-4 before Northwestern won game two 17-11.

Game One
The Eagles struck in the top of the first as Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) recorded the Eagles' second extra base hit of the season when he hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for an early 1-0 lead. Gettysburg responded in the bottom half of the frame, though, as they recorded four runs to take the lead, which they would never relinquish. The Bullets added three in the second and then four more in the third to take a 11-1 lead after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) led off with a single before Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) walked. Both men advanced via a wild pitch and Goodwin scored on an Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) RBI ground out. Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) followed with a RBI single to left to make it 11-3. Gettysburg added a twelfth run in the fourth and then two more in the sixth. The final scoring of the game came in the top half of the seventh as Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) got his first collegiate base hit. He singled to right, Parker Seachrist (Effingham, Ill./Effingham) advanced him to second on a groundout, and then Boerema scored on a Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) double to left.

Three Eagles reached base multiple times as Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) had three hits, Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) had two, and Simonson had two hits plus drew a walk. Max Barthel (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) got the start on the mound and he was followed by Noah Couwenhoven (Fridley, Minn./Bethel), Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani), and Dylan Ramberg (Harris, Minn./North Branch).

Game Two
The Bullets scored four runs in the top of the second to take an early lead, but Northwestern came roaring back in the bottom half of the frame. Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte), Philip Wall (Juneau, Alaska/IDEA), and Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) all walked to load the bases as nine consecutive Eagles reached base with one-out. Ben Spores (Arlington, Wa./Arlington) recorded his first college hit on a two-run single to left. Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) walked to re-load the bases before Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) singled and Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) brought home two runs with a double to left. Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) and Goodwin walked and then Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) got a run-scoring single to left. Wall hit a sacrifice fly before the inning came to a close as the Eagles offense erupted for eight runs on four hits.

Gettysburg made it 8-7 in the fifth, but Northwestern got some breathing room with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Boerema led off with a single before Spores reached via an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Szafraniec singled both of them home. Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) eventually came around to score after recording a single of his own to make it 11-7. Gettysburg kept battling, though, and added three more runs in the sixth off the strength of back-to-back home runs to start the inning.

Northwestern put the game out of reach in the sixth as six more Eagles came around to touch the plate. Lindow led off with a first pitch single to left and then Boerema and Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) walked. Szafraniec was hit by a pitch to bring across Lindow and then Simonson continued his hot day at the plate as he hit a two-run single to left. Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) walked and then Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) singled to right scoring two more runs before Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Eagles had eleven hits in the game and drew ten walks as every Eagle in the starting line-up reached base. Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge), Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin), Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte), Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls), Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield), and Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) all reached base multiple times as the Eagles offense exploded in a big way. Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) got the start on the mound and he struck out six in his five innings of work. Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) threw the final two innings and struck out four as the Eagles got their first win of the young season.
