Immaculata Cruises to Victory over Eagles

FORT PIERCE, FL -- The University of Northwestern baseball team fell to 0-4 on the season as they lost 17-2 to Immaculata University on Saturday evening.

Immaculata took a 2-0 in the top of the second and Northwestern clawed back to make it 2-1 in the fourth. The Eagles loaded the bases and Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) scored when Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Eagles stranded runners on second and third in what turned out to be their best chance to take the lead.

The Mighty Macs scored two runs in the fifth and then another in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1. Northwestern made it 5-2 in the sixth after Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) reached via an error and he scored on a Max Barthel (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) sacrifice fly. Everything fell apart in the seventh inning, though, as Immaculata scored 12 runs thanks to poor defensive play as well as timely hitting.

The Eagles recorded eight hits, all singles, on the day, their most in a game so far this season. Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) was the only Eagle with multiple hits as he had two base knocks. Seven errors doomed the Eagles as they allowed ten unearned runs to score over the course of the contest. Bryce Crabb (Des Moines, Iowa/Grand View Christian) gave up five runs (one earned) over six innings of work and struck out six. Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani), Noah Couwenhoven (Fridley, Minn./Bethel), Mason Skrede (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua), and Brandon Welch (Otsego, Minn./Rogers) all pitched in the seventh. Welch recorded the final seven outs and struck out four, while only giving up two hits.

The Eagles return to action on Monday, March 9th against Gettysburg College with first pitch of the double header scheduled for 10:00 AM EST. Northwestern will go on the road to play at Holman Stadium in Vero Beach, Florida. Holman Stadium is the focal point of the Historic Dodgertown complex and was the home of Dodgers spring training from 1953-2008. The game will be a rematch from 2018 when the two teams also met at Holman Stadium. Follow Northwestern baseball online this season at www.unweagles.com or on Instagram at @unwbaseballmn.
