SARTELL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team competed in Saturday action at STA-Fit when they met up with nonconference opponent, College of Saint Benedict. In what marked the Eagle's second showing of the season, the UNW team faced a tough CSB squad, who were picked to finish 7th in the highly competitive MIAC preseason poll.
While the Eagles weren't able to pull out a win in Saturday action, falling 9-0 to the Bennies -- several Eagles put together competitive performances. The no.1 doubles team of
Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and
Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won five games in an 8-5 loss.
Jessica Gross (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) and
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) also took five games in a loss at no. 3 doubles.
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) had a hard fought match at no. 4 singles. Weddle fell in a 6-3, 7-5 final.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15 when they meet up with North Central University. Action will get underway at 4 p.m. in Fridley, Minn. at Lifetime Fitness.
