Eagles Sweep North Central in Saturday Action

FRIDLEY, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team took on Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opponent, North Central, in Saturday afternoon action. After falling to a pair of strong MIAC opponents to open the spring season, the Eagles picked up their first win against the Rams in dominant fashion. UNW recorded a 9-0 sweep on the day.

Northwestern started Saturday play by taking all three doubles matches. The no. 1 team of Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) won in a quick 8-0 match. The Rams no. 2 team put up a fight, but Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and Sabrina Bush (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) came away with an 8-4 win. Angel Beaufeaux (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) put together an 8-1 win at no. 3.

Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) had to fight for her win in no. 1 singles, but she came away with a third set tiebreaker win over Madalyn Meetz. The rest of the Eagles squad dropped just three total games in straight set wins in the no. 2 through 6 singles spots.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 29 when they take on the University of Dubuque at Lifetime Fitness in White Bear Lake. Match play is set to begin at 3 p.m.
