WHITE BEAR LAKE, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team took on Iowa Rivers Conference opponent, University of Dubuqe, in Saturday afternoon action. The Eagles improved to 2-2 on the year after securing an 8-1 win on the day. The match marked the Eagles final competition before their Spring Break trip slated for March 9-13 in Orlando, Fla.
Northwestern started Saturday play by securing doubles wins at the no. 1 and 3 spots.
Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and
Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) recorded an 8-4 win at the top doubles spot, while
Jessica Gross (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) and
Taylar Smith (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) dominated at no. 3, winning 8-0.
Singles play continued to go smoothly for UNW, as all six Eagles won in straight sets, with the no 2, 4 and 6 positions dropping a combined five games only.
Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) recorded a solid 6-1, 6-0 win at no. 2, while
Belinda Weddle (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) won 6-1, 6-1 at no. 4.
Ashlyn Hughes (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) recorded her third straight singles win at no. 6 (6-1, 6-2).
The Eagles will return to action on Monday, March 9 when they take on Desales University in Orlanda, Fla. Action at the USTA National Tennis Center will get underway at 8 a.m.
