Men's Basketball Claims First Victory of the Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Basketball team was back in action for a Tuesday night showdown as they played host to the Waldorf Warriors. The Eagles are coming off their first loss of the season to Edgewood, while Waldorf came in with a 1-5 record on the season. The Eagles were just too much for Waldorf, winning this one, 80-67.

Waldorf came out strong in the first half, getting up on the Eagles 15-9. Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Kaleb Kempkes (Walton, Nebr./Palmyra) got the Eagles back in it after a pair of big buckets to bring the score to 25-20, UNW. Both teams would continue to trade points until once again, Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) came up big with a monster dunk to bring the Eagles up 41-30. Scoring would be scarce to close the half, ending with a score of 41-34 in favor of your Eagles.

Kaleb Kempkes (Walton, Nebr./Palmyra) and the UNW bench outscored Waldorf 21-3, making that the difference of the first half.

Johnny Erickson (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) and Cole Elrod (Elk River, Minn./Spectrum) combined to score the first 13 points of the second half for the Eagles, bringing the score to 54-42, UNW. Waldorf would not go away though, inching closer as the half rolled on, bringing the score to within 2 with 4 minutes to play (67-65). Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) and Caleb Waldeck (Newhall, Calif./Hart High) both hit big shots for the Eagles to extend their lead and ultimately get them the win, with a final score of 80-67.

The Eagles dominated in the paint, scoring 44 points inside, compared to the Warriors' 24.

Senior Johnny Erickson (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) led the Eagles with 19 points while adding 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Freshman big man Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) had himself a game too, chipping in 16 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. While Kaleb Kempkes (Walton, Nebr./Palmyra) came off the bench for the Eagles and scored 12 points.

Northwestern is back in action on Saturday, December 19 as they host Dakota State University with a scheduled tip-off time of 7 pm.
