Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Men's Basketball team was back in action for the first time in over a month on Wednesday evening as they played host to the Lakeland University Muskies, who hail from the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference. This is the 11
th time these teams have met, the last matchup coming almost a whopping 60 years ago.
The Eagles came into the matchup with a 1-1 record, defeating Waldorf in their last matchup of 2020. Lakeland defeated North Central (MN) on Saturday in their first matchup of the year to bring their record to 1-0.
The Eagles came out of the gate firing, going up 13-5 on the Muskies in the first 5 minutes of the game. They would continue to dominate the first half, holding Lakeland to only 29 points and 28% shooting from the field for the half. UNW shot almost 50%, making 19-39 shots and bringing 45 points with them into the half.
UNW dominated the inside in the first half, with 22 of their 45 points coming in the paint. Their bench also came up big, scoring 19 of their first half points.
The Eagles continued their excellence in the second half, extending their lead to almost 30 to end the game. It was a team effort all around for the Eagles, with 5 players scoring in double digits and their bench scoring 30 points to help lead the Eagles past Lakeland, 90-62.
Kyle Kaemingk (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) led the pack with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Freshman big man
Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) had himself a night, finishing with a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Senior
Noah Alm (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake) added 15 points and 6 rebounds.
Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) chipped in 11 points and off the bench,
Jace Kornstad (Nikiski, Alaska/Nikiski) had a career high 14 points to help lead the Eagles to victory.
The Eagles now sit at 2-1 on the season.
Northwestern will look for their 2
nd win of the new year next Wednesday, January 27 as they host UMAC conference foe, Crown College, in a non-conference matchup with a scheduled tip-off time of 7 pm.
