Men's Hoops Falls in Season Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team welcomed Edgewood College to the Ericksen Center for Saturday afternoon action. This marks the Eagles first game of the 2020-21 season, due to a few postponed and cancelled events. As Northwestern made a comeback in the second half, they were unable to keep the lead, losing to Edgewood 63-71.

Northwestern had met up with Edgewood College twice in school history, the previous time occurring on December 30, 2009 in De Pere, Wisconsin. The Eagles downed Edgewood, 84-70 at the St. Norbert Tournament. With tonight's loss, Northwestern falls to 1-2 all-time against Edgewood.

The game began with back and forth action by both teams as there were three ties in the first 10 minutes of play. UNW found themselves down 10 with just over six minutes left in the first half. Edgewood College led almost the whole half as the Eagles stayed with them and fought their way back in the last minute of play with a seven point run.

At the end of the half, Northwestern found themselves down just three, 28-31. Edgewood had just two turnovers to UNW's seven.

The Eagles found their stride on the offensive end in second half play, tying the score up 34-34 with an Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) bucket. Northwestern took their first and biggest lead by four, but Edgewood did not give up and tied things up again. They went on a run and were up by as many as 11 before UNW began to cut into the lead.

Edgewood continued their lead amidst Northwestern's consistent buckets. UNW came within six of Edgewood but were unable to ultimately take the lead. Northwestern falls to 0-1 on the season while Edgewood becomes 1-0.

Owen Boerema (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) finished on top for the UNW with 14 points and seven rebounds. Henry Fahnbulleh (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Johnny Erickson (Minneapolis, Minn./Hope Academy) had 11 points.

Nothwestern is back in action on Tuesday, December 15 as they host Waldorf University with a 7 pm tip-off.
