ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Basketball Team was back in action Friday as they played host to Edgewood College. UNW came into the matchup with a 3-1 record after falling to North Central University last Saturday. For Edgewood, this is their first matchup of the season after going 25-3 during their 2019-20 campaign and making an appearance in the NCAA Div. III Women's Basketball Tournament.
Both teams started on the right foot, trading points with one another until UNW Forward
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) scored 5 straight points to bring the Eagles ahead 15-9. Edgewood did not score another point the rest of the quarter, bringing an end of first quarter score of 23-9, UNW.
Edgewood would inch closer in the second quarter, outscoring UNW 15-13 and bringing a score of 36-24 into the half.
The second half opened up with Edgewood outscoring UNW 8-2, cutting the deficit to only six. The Eagles would eventually find their groove though, thanks to
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) and
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) each hitting huge three's to shift the momentum back in favor of UNW. The Eagles went on to outscore Edgewood 14-6 the rest of the quarter to bring the score to 52-40 in favor of UNW.
Edgewood did not go down without a fight though, opening the fourth quarter with a 22-5 run to bring the score to 58-58. Edgewood continued to dominate, going up 65-60 under a minute left. With their back against the wall, UNW senior
Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) hit a huge three to bring the game within two.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) continued the comeback for the Eagles by splitting the defense and hitting a game tying layup with 8 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
UNW dominated overtime, holding the lead the entire time while also outscoring Edgewood 14-10 to take the game, 79-75.
Turnovers were the key in tonight's matchup, as Edgewood led in that category with 20, while UNW only had 14.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) led the Eagles with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) chipped in 19 points and 14 rebounds while
