Paup Scores a Career High 18 points as UNW Holds off Viterbo at Home

ST.PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern Women's Basketball Team played host to the V-Hawks of Viterbo for a Saturday afternoon showdown. The Eagles are coming off of a blowout win vs Maranatha Baptist last Saturday and came in looking for win number two on the year.

The Eagles got off to a slow start, going down 10-3 midway through the first quarter, but a three pointer from Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) would have the Eagles go on an 18 to 13 run to close the quarter tied, 23-23.

The second quarter would be no different, with both teams trading leads. Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) went on to hit a couple of three pointers to help put the Eagles on top at half, 47-42.

Lund came out firing once again to hit another three pointer to open the half, while also leading the Eagles to another lead at the end of a quarter, 63-58.

The Final quarter would be a close one, with both teams trading leads, but Haley Paup made a couple of huge baskets to surge the Eagles past Viterbo, 83-81.

Second chance points and points off turnovers were the difference in today's game, as UNW outscored Viterbo 17-11 on second chance points and 21-13 in points off turnovers.

Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the way for UNW with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assist. Junior guard Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) finished the night with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists while Hailey Paup (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Concordia Academy) would have a career high 18 points, with 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

The Eagles now sit at 2-0 on the year, while Viterbo moves to 1-1.

UNW will look for win number three on the season when they head down to Forest City, Iowa on Wednesday, November 18th. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
