ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team played host to Clarke University for a Wednesday evening showdown. This is the second matchup of the year between both teams, with Clarke coming out with a victory game one, 8-1. Both teams are coming off of two straight losses and sit with a record of 3-6.
It was Senior Day for the Eagles, who honored six student athletes on the night.
Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View),
Josh Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View),
Bryan Sanchez (El Paso, Tex./Franklin),
Samuel Hendry (Spooner, Wis./Spooner High School),
Corbin Munger (Austin, Minn./Austin High School) and
Josiah Otis (Shoreview, Minn./Homeschool) were all recognized for their hard work and dedication to the Eagles over the last four years.
It was a hard fought match for the Eagles, but they came out to score the opening goal at the 20:49 mark thanks to
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) who is now tied for the team lead with 4. Junior Defender
Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) would add on a second goal for the Eagles on the half after a rebound from a shot by
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High). Clarke would not go away though, as they scored with 10 minutes left in the half to take a 2-1 score into the half. UNW led the shots department at the half with six, compared to Clarke's four.
The Eagles came out striking in the second half, adding seven more shots to their total.
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) added his 4
th goal of the season at the 65:54 mark on an assist by
Joshua Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) to take a 3-1 lead over the Pride. Clarke would not stand down, coming back and scoring at the 77:48 mark to bring the Pride within one of the Eagles. Frigid temperatures wouldn't stop the Eagles in this one though as they would take the match, 3-2.
Jonathan-Thomas Olsen (Modesto, Calif./James Enochs High) led the Eagles in shots with 4, while
Luke McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield High School),
Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) and
Koby Wesselink (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar High School) each added 2 for the match. Goal Keeper
Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) added 3 saves for the match.

Greg Wheaton now sits only two wins away from 170 total wins as UNW's head man.
