UNW Downs Mount Marty; Defeats Briar Cliff in Five

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The University of Northwestern women's volleyball team traveled south for a triangular with Mount Marty College and Briar Cliff University for Saturday afternoon action, respectively. Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) had 26 kills on the night while Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 91 assists.

Northwestern 3, Mount Marty 0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-16)

The Lancers entered the match with a 5-9 record on the season and a three game losing streak after Northwestern swept them Saturday. The Eagles did not have a problem defeating Mount Marty, winning the first set by 12 points.

UNW had multiple runs to get ahead big against the Lancers, led by Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) and Soleil Newland (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids - Rice). The Eagles had 18 kills in the first set, achieving an impressive .405 hitting percentage, to Mount Mary's seven. Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) and Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) had five kills each to lead Northwestern.

Following a one point advantage in the beginning of the second set, UNW would not lose the lead. Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) had five kills, while Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 10 assists in set two to put Northwestern up 2-0.

The third set would be nothing different for Northwestern as they continued to push and sweep Mount Marty. The Eagles had runs of seven, three and four points to put them on top 25-16 over the Lancers.

UNW finished match one with an impressive 40 kills and .320 kills per set. Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) finished with 12 kills, Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) had nine and Soleil Newland (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids - Rice) added seven. Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 33 assists and Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) had 11 digs.

Northwestern 3, Briar Cliff 2 (20-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17, 15-12)

Following the Eagle's three-set sweep with Mount Marty, they were right back at it – taking on Briar Cliff University. With the second time meeting this season, the Chargers rallied to take set one, 25-20 before Northwestern found their stride.

UNW was dominant in set two, out hitting Briar Cliff 18 to 13 with a .302 kills per set while committing just five errors. Briar Cliff got things going in set three and recorded 16 kills to the Eagles 12.

Northwestern put the hammer down in sets four and five out hitting the Chargers 26 kills to 19.

Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) finished the match with 17 kills, Gabby Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) (recording her career high kills) and Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) each had 14. Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out an impressive 58 assists while Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) had 34 digs.

The Eagles defeated Briar Cliff for the second time this season and improve to 9-4 on the season. Northwestern will head to Dubuque, Iowa next Saturday to take on Saint Ambrose University and Clarke University, times TBD.
