Eagles End 14-Game Streak, Recording Dominant 81-66 Win Over Superior

ST. PAUL, MINN. -- The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hosted the UW-Superior Yellowjackets on Wednesday night in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. Heading into the match-up, the Yellowjackets and Eagles rested in second and third places respectively in the UMAC standings. With an explosive second quarter and continued second half success, the Eagles put an end to a 14 game losing streak with Superior, dating back to 2010.

Northwestern sealed the 81-66 final win to move to 10-7 overall and 6-2 in the UMAC, while Superior falls to 10-6 and 6-2 in league play.

A fast-paced start resulted in the Yellowjackets taking an early lead. Despite suffering a three-point deficit, the Eagles hung with and put together a strong finish to first quarter action to lead, 21-20.

UNW stayed hot in second quarter play as Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) made three key three-pointers to help Northwestern pull away with their largest lead (11). The Eagles put together a strong defensive effort led by Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) with a pair of blocks. Northwestern dominated the boards, pulling down 17 rebounds to Superior's 10.

With time expiring in second quarter action, Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) drained a three pointer to keep the momentum rolling. Northwestern scored a hefty 27 points to the Yellowjackets 17 to hold a 48-37 lead at the break.

Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) led the Eagles at the half with 16 points, while Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) scored 14 and Miranda Crenshaw (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added 10.

Northwestern began third quarter play with high energy right off the bat. The Yellowjackets cut the lead to as little as four, but the Eagles continued to stay ahead, capitalized by a Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) three with third quarter time winding down.

Fourth quarter play began with an 11 point Northwestern lead, 65-54. After a few scoreless minutes, Kelsea lund made an explosive three pointer to increase the lead to 12 and the Eagles never looked back -- leading by as much as 21 in the final quarter.
