PELLA, IOWA – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team ventured south to take on the Dutch of Central College in a mid-week contest. This first ever meeting between the two programs leaned in favor of Central, as they defeated Northwestern by a score of 2-1. The Dutch were 2-0 entering the game, while the Eagles were coming off a heart-breaking loss from last Friday. With the loss, UNW moves to 0-2 on the season.
The Northwestern offense was aggressive in the opening half, firing off eight shots.
Isaiah Sharp (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) and
Miguel Martinez-Urrutia (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) rifled shots on goal for UNW in the 15
th and 21
st minutes, respectively, but both were saved by the Central goalie. The Dutch tallied nine shots in the first half, but the Eagle defense held strong as the game was tied 0-0 entering halftime.
The second half led to scoring for both teams. Central got the scoring started, nabbing two goals within five minutes of the second half starting. It appeared that UNW was going to be held scoreless, until senior
Derrick Aminga (Andover, Minn./Andover) found the back of the net in the 80
th minute to attempt to spark the offense. The Eagles increased the pressure in the final ten minutes, but were unable to net another goal before time expired.
Northwestern looks to bounce back with a double-header this weekend, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran Friday, September 6 and Saint John's on Saturday, September 7. Fans can stay up-to-date with Eagle soccer at www.unweagles.com.
