MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team hit the road to take on Bethany Lutheran College in the Eagles first away conference match-up this season. The Eagles cruised to a three-set sweep over the Vikings, the program's seventh straight 3-0 win against BLC. With final set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-17, consistency was the driving force behind UNW's dominant win.
The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the year and 2-0 in UMAC play. Bethany Lutheran falls to 5-12 overall, 0-1 in conference action.
Northwestern hit an impressive .342 average in the match, committing just three total errors in the final two sets combined. In addition to the Eagles steady offense, they also put together seven blocks to the Vikings' one on the defensive end.
The dynamic outside duo of
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) and
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) were at it again – putting together 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Schwitters hit .464 in the match and added eight digs.
Freshman middle,
Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) also did some damage. Pelzel recorded eight kills on 19 attempts, while fellow rookie,
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) added five kills and 11 digs on the night.
Hardy and
Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) were responsible for Northwestern's blocking efforts. Gasch recorded two solo and assisted on three.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 37 assists and
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) picked up 23 digs in the Eagles win.
Bethany Lutheran was led offensively by Megan Rutt who finished with 10 kills.
Northwestern will be back at it on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they take on Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. against the Gusties. Live stats and video will be available
