ST. PAUL, MINN. - The UNW men's soccer team host the Finlandia University Lions from Hancock, Mich., on Friday in a late-afternoon contest. The Eagles were able to pick up their first win of the season, defeating the Lions by a final score of 5-1. With the win, Northwestern improves to 1-7-1 on the year.
The Eagles did not waste any time in the first half, as
Samuel Jorgensen (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis Central) scored the first goal off of a cross pass from
Alexander Raverty (North Mankato, Minn./Homeschool) just two-and-a-half minutes into the contest.
Miguel Martinez-Urrutia (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) got the Eagles on the board next, scoring off a penalty kick, only three minutes after the first goal. Jorgensen would go on to score two more goals in the period with assists from
Derrick Aminga (Andover, Minn./Andover) and
Cole Uplegger (New Prague, Minn./New Prague High School) to complete his hat trick. Freshman
Tim Meyer (Ashland, Wis./Ashland High School) also scored his first career goal, as Uplegger notched his second assist of the evening. The Lions were able to net a goal of their own amidst the onslaught of UNW goals, as the score read 5-1 entering intermission.
Northwestern kept up their pressure in the second half, launching 12 more shots towards the Finlandia defense. The Lions defense held strong, however, as they kept the Eagles from netting another goal. The UNW defense would hold strong the second half, holding off all six of Finlandia's shots.
Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) was able to tally three saves, picking up the win.
The Eagles will return to Reynold's Field on Tuesday, October 1, welcoming Bethany Lutheran. Follow along with UNW men's soccer by visiting www.unweagles.com and following @unwmsoc on Twitter and Instagram.
