ST. PAUL, MINN. – The UNW men's soccer team hosted the Pipers of Hamline University in a mid-week bout. This was the 29th all-time meeting between the two programs, and it ended in a way it never has before. Spanning over a forty year period, the Eagles and Pipers have never ended a contest in a tie until tonight. After 110 minutes of play, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
Northwestern came out firing to start the game, launching three shots in the opening two minutes of play. The UNW squad was able to get two shots on goal in the final minutes of the half, both of which were unable to get past the HU goaltender. The Eagles were able to amass nine total shots in the half to the six shots from the Pipers, but both defenses would hold strong and not allow a goal.
Hamline took more control of the second half, totaling eight shots to Northwestern's five. The Eagles were able to gain a man advantage in the 77th minute, as a Piper was ejected for receiving his second yellow card in the game. Unable to capitalize on the advantage, regulation ended in a stalemate.
In the overtime periods, UNW outshot the Pipers five to one. Northwestern had two great shots on net in the first overtime period, but the Hamline keeper made two fantastic saves. With two stellar defensive performances, the contest would end in a draw.
Derrick Aminga (Andover, Minn./Andover) led the Eagle offensive efforts with six shots (one SOG), and
Miguel Martinez-Urrutia (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) followed with four shots (one SOG). In net,
