ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team welcomed Hamline University to the Ericksen Center for a Saturday night non-conference match-up. In front of a packed home crowd, the Eagles cruised to a three-set sweep over the MIAC opponent, a great end to UNW's Homecoming celebration. With final set scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-17, Northwestern picked up the program's seventh straight win over Hamline, dating back to 2001.
UNW improves to 7-4 on the year, while the Pipers fall to 9-4 this season.
The Eagles were consistent throughout the match, hitting a team average .317 to the Pipers .108. After a close first set, UNW put together an errorless second set to best the Pipers by 12.
Junior
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) led the Eagles offensively, recording 16 kills in the three-setter. Fuglestad hit .457 with no errors in 35 attack attempts.
Along with the team's noteworthy hitting percentage, Northwestern also recorded eight service aces.
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) led the defensive efforts with 26 digs.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) added 33 assists on the night.
Hamline was led offensively by Gabby Robinson who finished with 10 kills.
Northwestern will be back at it on Friday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Mankato, Minn. for a UMAC match-up with Bethany Lutheran. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
