Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brendan Reu

Men’s Soccer Falls to V-Hawks Thursday Afternoon

LA CROSSE, WIS. -  The Northwestern men's soccer team crossed the border to battle the V-Hawks of Viterbo University. The thirteenth all-time meeting between the two programs resulted in a 1-0 victory for Viterbo, moving the all-time record to 7-4-2 in favor of Northwestern. With tonight's downfall, UNW drops to 0-8 on the season.

The Eagles started the game hot, firing off three shots in the first ten minutes of play. Viterbo would answer back with a trio of shots of their own, connecting on one of them in the twenty-first minute to take a 1-0 lead in the game. Northwestern would tack on six more shots in the period, but none of which would get passed the Viterbo defense.

The V-Hawks would hang on to their 1-0 lead throughout the remainder of the game, with neither team scoring another goal. The Eagles would bolster another nine shots in the final half of play, including four in the last four minutes but Viterbo defended their home field successfully.

Miguel Martinez-Urrutia (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) tallied two shots and one shot on goal, while Alexander Raverty (North Mankato, Minn./Homeschool) notched the lone other shot on goal for UNW. In net for the Eagles, junior Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) faced six shots, stopping five of them.

Northwestern returns home next week September 25, hosting the Hamline Pipers. Fans can stay up-to-date with UNW soccer by visiting www.unweagles.com and following @unwmsoc on Instagram and Twitter.
