ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team took on St. Catherine University in Tuesday night non-conference action. The Eagles fell to the Wildcats, who move to 8-3 on the year. Northwestern last took on St. Kate's in 2016, defeating the MIAC opponent in three sets. Tonight, set scores came in at 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21. Northwestern moves to 6-4 overall this season.
The Wildcats took an early 6-2 lead in set one, but Northwestern dug their way out of the deficit – taking their first lead at 18-17 on a kill by
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian). St. Kate's responded by orchestrating a 6-0 run that UNW would be unable to recover from.
The Wildcats continued to put together scoring streaks in set two – going on an early 4-0 run to ultimately lead for the set's entirety. St. Kate's consistency was what allowed them to secure the three set sweep. The Wildcats hit a .340 team average to Northwestern's .183. They committed just nine hitting errors in the match.
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) and
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) finished with 10 kills apiece, while
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) dug up a team-best 11 balls.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 30 assists in the three-setter.
Northwestern will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they welcome Hamline University to the Ericksen Center. The match, which will take place on UNW's Homecoming, is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
