DULUTH, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team dropped its regular season finale today at St. Scholastica, falling to the Saints by an 8-1 score. The loss snaps the Eagles four game win streak and breaks their unblemished UMAC record. The 8-1 win was the biggest margin of victory for the Saints against the Eagles since 2013.
UNW began play as their doubles teams dropped all three matches. The no. 2 team of Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) found themselves in a tight battle, but ultimately fell just short in an 8-6 defeat.
Northwestern's singles players battled hard across the board, but were only able to take one of the six matches. Rachel Lukarilla put together a solid performance to come up with a win (6-4, 6-4) at the four position. At no. 6, Rinta found herself in another close matchup, taking eleven games (7-6, 7-5) in her defeat.
The Eagles will return to the courts on Tuesday to host a UMAC semi-final matchup against the no. 3 seed, UW-Superior. The championship match will take place at the location of the highest remaining seed on Saturday. All information can be found on the tournament website.
