Women's Tennis Cruises to UMAC Championship, Defeating UW-Superior 7-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team welcomed UW-Superior to St. Paul for Wednesday afternoon Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) tournament play. The semifinal match, which featured the no. 2 seeded Eagles and no. 3 seeded Yellowjackets, resulted in a 7-2 win for Northwestern. The Eagles improve to 14-10 this season.
 
UNW will advance to the 2019 UMAC tournament championship to face top-seeded St. Scholastica. The Eagles fell to the Saints in Saturday regular season action.

Northwestern got off to a smooth start, cruising to three straight doubles wins. The no. 3 duo of Rachel Lukkarila (Becker, Minn./Homeschool) and Gracie LeBrun (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) recorded a dominant 8-1 win.

In singles action, Nikki Paskewitz (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) and Lukkarila cruised to straight set wins. At no. 5 singles, Gracie LeBrun (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) dropped her first set before coming back to win a 6-0 set two and 10-6 third set tiebreaker. Maffee Rinta at no. 6 singles recorded a similar come-from-behind win (3-6, 6-4, 10-6). Lukkarila has won five straight at the no. 4 spot.

The Eagles championship match against St. Scholastica is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 4 in Duluth, Minn. All tournament information including scores, recaps, team information and more can be found on the UMAC Women's Tennis Tournament page.
