Women's Tennis Downs UW-Superior, UMAC Championship on the Line in Saturday's Scholastica Match

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Northwestern women's tennis team picked up a road victory Friday night in Superior, defeating the Yellowjackets 8-1. The win marked the team's fourth straight and moves them to a perfect 6-0 in UMAC play.

Northwestern got off to a quick start in doubles action, taking all three matches. The no. 2 team of Shawna Spears (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) and Mafee Rinta (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) pulled off a tight victory, winning by an 8-7 score to give the team a 3-0 lead heading into the singles portion of play.

UNW continued their dominant play, securing five of the six matches. At the no. 1 spot, Nikki Paskewitz (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) was especially impressive in her win (6-1, 6-0), while at the five and six positions Gracie LeBrun (Pine City, Minn./Pine City) (6-2, 7-6) and Rinta (6-4, 7-6) both fought hard to win matches with second set tiebreaker victories.

The Eagles will return to the courts tomorrow for the regular season finale in Duluth against the St. Scholastica Saints, where the UMAC regular season championship will be on the line. Fans can head to unweagles.com to stay up to date with UNW Women's Tennis.
