Baseball Sweeps Crown Behind Strong Starts from Wall and Lindow

The University of Northwestern Eagles swept the Crown College Storm on Thursday, winning game one 3-2 and game two 5-1.

Game One
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as the Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the frame.  Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin), Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau), and Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) all singled before Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) hit a sacrifice fly to score Peterson.  Crown responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to tie it up, but Northwestern took the lead for the second time in the third.  Peterson hit his first of three doubles (he recorded four hits in the game) and scored when Lindow singled to left field.

The Storm answered once again in the bottom of the fifth to tie it, but Northwestern took the lead for good in the seventh.  Peterson hit his second double with one out in the frame and then Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) followed with a single to center to drive him in.  That was all the offense that Philip Wall (Juneau, Alaska/IDEA) needed as he went the distance while scattering sevens hits and allowing two earned runs.  He struck out three over his 109 pitches and shut Crown down for the majority of the game.

The Eagles recorded 10 hits on the game as Peterson had four, and scored all three runs.  Krahn and Lindow both had two hits and an RBI, Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) had a hit and drew a walk, and Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) drew three walks.

Game Two
Northwestern managed to put up a run in the top of the first for the second straight game, which helped to set the tone for the remainder of the evening.  Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) led off with a single and then promptly stole second.  Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) walked and the Eagles tried for a double steal but Simonson was thrown out at third.  Peterson managed to steal second and then third as well before scoring on Aaron Krahn's (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) sacrifice fly to center field.

The Eagles added another run in the second as Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) smacked a double down the right field line and then stole third base.  Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) hit the Eagles second sacrifice fly in as many innings to drive him in and the Eagles extended their lead to 2-0.  Northwestern continued to hit the ball well in the third as they plated two more runs.  Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) reached via a feilder's choice before Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) hit his first collegiate triple to drive him in from first base.  Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) followed with a single up the middle to make it 4-0 Northwestern.

Crown scored once in the bottom of the fifth but that was all that they could muster against Quinton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls).  Northwestern added their fifth and final run via a solo home run by the other half of the sibling battery as Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) hit his third home run of the season.  Quinton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) followed in Wall's footsteps by also throwing a complete game in 109 pitches.  He scattered 11 hits over the nine innings and struck out two while only allowing the one earned run.

The Eagles recorded eight hits in the nightcap and spread them out throughout the lineup as Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) was the only Eagle to record multiple hits.  Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) and Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) both had a hit and drew a walk to help pace the offense.

UNW will return to action on Friday, April 26th in a conference matchup.  First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 at Reynolds Field.  Northwestern enters with a 5-5 record in the conference (third place), while Martin Luther is 3-7 (8th place).  Follow Eagles baseball online this season at www.unweagles.com.
