Morrell Guides Eagles to Sweep Over Martin Luther; Spencer Ties Saves Record

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team welcomed Martin Luther College to Reynolds Field for a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference games Friday evening. The Eagles put together a dominant 12-1 (seven inning) win in game one, and tacked on a 4-3 victory in game two to improve to 7-5 in league play. The Eagles recorded 25 hits on the day.

Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) showcased a notable performance in the series, going 4-for-6 at the plate with a triple, a homerun and seven RBIs. The sophomore also threw 8.1 innings in game two to record his fourth win on the mound this season.

Game 1: Northwestern 12, Martin Luther 1
The Eagles took the lead early, scoring one in the bottom of the first on a Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) RBI single. Northwestern tacked on three more runs in the second when Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) doubled to left field to score Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) and Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) followed up with a two-RBI homer to left field.

Northwestern continued to apply the pressure, scoring three more runs in the next two innings before doing major damage in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles put together four runs on five hits to take an 11-1 lead. They added one more in the sixth and shut down the Knights in the top of seven to end the game early (10 run rule).

Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) added four hits, a pair of RBIs and a run, while Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) tacked on three hits and 5 RBIs.

Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) got the nod, throwing the complete seven innings. Ludzack allowed just six hits and one run to earn his third win this year.

Game 2: Northwestern 4, Martin Luther 3
The Knights were first to score in game two, but the Eagles were quick to take back the lead. Northwestern scored three runs, the result of an error and a two-RBI double from Morrell to take the 3-1 lead after two complete.

Following a scoreless third and fourth inning, the Eagles added another run in the fifth (4-1). Northwestern appeared to be cruising to another victory, but Martin Luther made things interesting. The Knights scored two runs on a pair of hits in the top of the ninth to pull within one.

With a runner in scoring position, Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) took the mound with one out on the board. Martin Luther's Deisinger lined out to the shortshot before Spencer recorded a big time strike out to earn his seventh save this season and secure the 4-3 win. With the save, Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) ties the Northwestern school record for saves in a season, set by Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) in 2016.

Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) earned the win, throwing 8.1 innings and allowing just seven hits and one earned run.

Northwestern will return to action on Monday, April 29 when they travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
