Baseball Falls to Bethel in 11-inning Battle

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team welcomed Bethel University to Reynolds Field for a Monday night non-conference tilt. The neighboring schools battled it out into extras innings before Bethel came out on top, 4-3 after 11 complete.

The Eagles move to 14-14 on the year, while the Royals improve to 15-11 overall.

Bethel was first to score, tacking on two runs in the top of the second after putting together three hits. Northwestern quickly earned one back in the bottom half of the inning. Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) led off with a single, advanced to second on a Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) walk and was brought home by a Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles took the lead (3-2) after Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) and Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) scored – the result of RBIs from Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) and Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau)

Despite holding BU scoreless for five complete innings, the Royals finally added another run to the board in the top of the eighth to tie it up at 3-3. Scoreless through the rest of regulation, it wasn't until the top of the 11th that either team could break the tie. The Royals tacked on one run, taking a 4-3 lead and the Eagles were unable to answer.

Although Northwestern outhit the Royals (10-9), they left nine runners stranded on base.

Three Eagles saw action on the mound including four innings of work from Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee), five innings from Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) and two from Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge). Simonson was credited with the loss, throwing the final two innings of the contest.

Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) led Northwestern at the plate, going 3-for-5. Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) recorded two hits in the contest.

UNW will return to action on Wednesday, April 24 when they travel to St. Bonifacius to take on Crown College. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. The Storm enters the match-up at 4-4 in the UMAC (fourth place). Northwestern is just below at 3-5 in league play this season.
