ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Northwestern baseball team welcomed St.
Scholastica to Reynolds Field for a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (
UMAC) contests Monday afternoon. The Eagles fell in both, dropping game one (10-4) and game two (5-1).
The Eagles move to 13-11 overall and 2-4 in the
UMAC.
Scholastica improves to 13-8 on the year. They sit atop the UMAC at 6-0 in conference play.
Game 1: Scholastica 10, Northwestern 4
The Saints got off to a hot start, scoring four times in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth.
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) recorded a grand slam to left field, bringing in
Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby),
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and
Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) to make it a 4-4 ball game.
Unfortunately, that would end the scoring efforts for the Eagles while the Saints tacked on nine more hits and six more runs to cruise to a 10-4 final.
UNW was held to just four hits, led by
Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) with two.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) drew two walks.
Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) got the nod, throwing six complete and allowing six hits. Wakabayashi and Flanigan added a few innings of work. Wakabayashi was credited with the loss, moving to 2-2 on the mound this season.
Game 2: Scholastica 5, Northwestern 1
Northwestern was first to score in game two, taking a 1-0 lead when
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) singled to center to score
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls).
The Saints put together a three-run sixth inning to take the definitive lead. They added two more runs in the final two innings to seal the doubleheader sweep.
UNW tacked on five hits in the game, while Scholastica finished with 10. In eight innings of work,
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) allowed just three earned runs and struck out five. He moves to 3-3 on the mound this season.
Northwestern will return to action on Tuesday when they welcome UW-Superior to Reynolds Field. First pitch of the UMAC doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m.
