ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team welcomed UW-Superior to Reynolds Field for Tuesday night Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play. The Eagles, who were the designated away team in the contests, lost an early 6-0 lead to fall 10-7 in game one. They came back to record a 3-2 win in game two.
With the split, Northwestern moves to 14-12 overall, 3-5 in conference play.
Game 1: UW-Superior 10, Northwestern 7
The Eagles started strong, scoring two runs in the top of the second on solo homeruns from
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau).
The Eagles extended the lead to 6-0 after a monstrous top half of the fourth. Krahn tacked on two more RBIs when he doubled to left center to score
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Lindow.
Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) followed with two-run homer, scoring Krahn.
What felt like a secure lead quickly diminished as the Yellowjackets managed to score five runs in the bottom half of the inning, the result of five hits (including a homerun) and a Northwestern error.
Superior ultimately took the lead in the bottom of fifth. They added two more in the seventh and one in the eighth to go up 10-6. Northwestern earned one back in the ninth, but it was too little too late.
Superior recorded 18 hits to the Eagles eight. Wakabayashi led UNW at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs, a walk and an RBI.
Wall started on the mound for Northwestern and threw five innings of work before
Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) finished out the final three innings.
Game 2: Northwestern 3, UW-Superior 2
The Eagles responded to the Yellowjackets game one comeback in a big way. Despite Superior taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning, Northwestern tied it up in the top of two when Wakabayashi scored on a balk.
The Eagles took a one run lead when
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) homered to left field in the top of the third. Superior responded with a run of their own, evening the score in the bottom half of the inning.
After four scoreless innings, Northwestern got the go-ahead run across the plate on a
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) stolen home base.
Quinton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) threw seven innings and allowed eight hits and two runs to earn the win.
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) came in for the final two innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. Spencer recorded his sixth save of the year, the most in the UMAC and second most in UNW school history in a season.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, April 18 when they head down Snelling to Macalester College. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. in the non-conference tilt.
