The University of Northwestern Eagles (10-6) defeated the Hamline University Pipers (7-11) 4-1 on Monday night.
The Pipers got two of their four hits in the first inning but
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) stranded both of them. The Eagles scored once in the bottom of the frame as
Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) and
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) both drew walks. They advanced to second and third on a wild pitch before
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) got an RBI groundout to drive in Szafraniec.
The Eagles added the other three runs in the third as
Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) and Morrell led off the inning with walks. Szafraniec had a bunt single that he laid down perfectly down the third base line to load the bases. Lindow proceeded to hit a ground ball to the third baseman who went to second for the force out. Both Piersma and Morrell scored, though, as Morrell just kept right on running and scored without a throw.
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) followed with a triple to left center field to score Lindow all the way from first to complete the scoring for the Eagles.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) and
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) both had two walks,
Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton),
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau), and
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) all had a hit and a walk, and
Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) had three walks. The Eagles drew 12 walks on the game with four hits.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) (2-2) got the start and the win as he gave up two hits while striking out two in his scheduled four-inning stint.
Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) then threw the next four innings and only gave up one hit while striking out three.
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) got his fourth save as he gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth and struck out one.
The Eagles next travel to St. Peter to take on the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties on Wednesday with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2:30.
