Game 1: Gustavus 3, Northwestern 0
One hit in the first inning was the determining factor in game one. It was a three-run homer in the bottom half of the inning that gave the Gusties a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles out-hit the opponent 4-3 to finish out the game, but were unable to get any runs on the board.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School),
Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton),
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) recorded a hit apiece in the loss.
Quinton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) got the nod, pitching six complete and giving up two earned runs and just five hits in the loss.
Game 2: Northwestern 5, Gustavus 3
The Eagles were quick to respond in game two, scoring three runs off the bat in the top of the first. A pair of hits from
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) and
Philip Wall (Juneau, Alaska/IDEA) combined with three Gustavus errors resulted in a wealth of production for the Eagles.
UNW tacked on one more run in both the second and third innings as
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) and Krahn recorded RBI singles to give Northwestern the 5-0 lead.
The Gusties fought back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third, but it wasn't enough to deter the Eagles. In six innings of work,
Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) allowed just two hits and no earned runs.
Philip Wall (Juneau, Alaska/IDEA) came in retire the side in the seventh, striking out one. Wall earned his first save of the season. Wakabayashi and Wall combined to allow no hits and just one base runner in the final four innings of play.
