The University of Northwestern Eagles (7-5) split against the Augsburg University Auggies (4-7) as they won game one 7-3 before falling 6-3 in game two.
Game One
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) led off the game with a walk.
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) singled him to second before
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) reached base for the first of six times on the day to drive home Morrell. Piersma singled home
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) and then
Tyler Stopera (St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony Village) singled home Lindow before the Eagles stranded three runners in the frame.
Augsburg added one in the top of the third and then two more in the fifth to tie the score, but the Eagles responded in the bottom half of the frame. Lindow led off the inning with a two-strike double off the top of the left-field fence and
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) laced a single to left on the second pitch of his at-bat to drive in Lindow and give the Eagles a lead that they would never relinquish.
Northwestern's offense exploded in the sixth with a stretch of four straight batters reaching base, all with two-outs, and three of them came around to touch the plate.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) smacked a single back up the middle before
Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) pulled a fastball down the right-field line for his first collegiate home run.
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) followed that up with a walk and then
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) hit his second double of the game to score Krahn all the way from first.
Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) (2-1) pitched a complete game on the mound and gave up two earned runs in his seven innings of work. He scattered six hits while striking out five and had the best start of his young collegiate career. Morrell, Krahn, Lindow, Goodwin, and Stopera all reached base multiple times as the offense exploded for 11 hits in the seven inning affair.
Game Two
The Eagles once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but this time were not able to add any more runs on later in the game.
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) hit an 0-2 fastball to left-center field for a two-out triple before
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) hit the next pitch over the left-field fence for his first home run of the season.
Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) then added to the hit parade by hitting a double before
Parker Seachrist (Effingham, Ill./Effingham) scored him via a bloop to right field.
The Auggies, though, got on the board in a big way in the top of the third. They had three straight guys reach base with two-outs and they managed to score five runs in the frame before adding a sixth via a leadoff homer in the fourth. The Eagles threatened in the sixth but were unable to score after Lindow reached via a hit-by-pitch and Seachrist walked.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) got the start and pitched the first four innings before
Dylan Ramberg (Harris, Minn./North Branch) threw three scoreless innings and only gave up two hits. Lindow and Seachrist were the only Eagles to reach base multiple times. In the past seven games, Lindow is a combined 15 for 24 (0.625 AVG) with 8 RBIs, 3 2Bs, and a HR.
Northwestern next host the Macalester Scots at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 27th at Reynolds Field.
