ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team welcomed Macalester College to Reynolds Field for a nine-inning non-conference contest. The Eagles took an early lead, but gave up a five-run sixth inning to eventually fall to the MIAC foe, 10-7.
The Eagles move to 7-6 on the year, while Macalester improves to 6-5 overall. The Scots take the lead in the all-time series against Northwestern, 29-28-1.
Northwestern got off to a strong start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on RBIs from
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) and
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls). Lindow currently leads the Eagles in runs batted in this season with 13.
Macalester responded in the top of the second, homering to even the score at 2 apiece, but Northwestern answered back in the bottom of three when Lindow tacked on another RBI and
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) scored on a wild pitch (after reaching base on a single through the right side).
UNW added one more run in the fourth to take a game-best three run lead, but it wouldn't be enough. The Scots put together six runs in the next two innings (largely due to a five hit, five run inning) to take the definitive lead.
They added two more runs in the eighth inning before Northwestern finished out the scoring efforts with a two-run homerun from
Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) in the bottom of nine. Peterson went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) added two hits, while
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School),
Philip Wall (Juneau, Alaska/IDEA), and
Ryan Flanigan (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) each tacked on one.
Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) started on the mound for the Eagles, throwing 4.2 innings of work before being relieved by
Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge). Simonson was credited with the loss, his first this year.
Max Barthel (Farmington, Minn./Farmington) saw two innings on the mound and
Payton Brown (Elk River, Minn./PACT Charter) closed out the ninth, retiring the side.
Northwestern will return to action on Friday, March 29 when they take on Martin Luther in a non-conference doubleheader at Reynolds Field. The game was originally to be played in New Ulm, but will take place in St. Paul due to field conditions. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
