Eagles Win in Thriller Over Highlanders

The Northwestern Eagles improved their record to 4-2 as they came from behind in the bottom of the tenth to secure the 5-4 victory over the Cairn University Highlanders (3-5).  Cairn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first but Northwestern struck back in the bottom of the frame.  Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) led off with a walk and Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) scored him with his first of three singles.

Northwestern took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) doubled to lead off the frame and Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) got a two-out single to bring him home.  Cairn tied it up in the top of the sixth and the score remained tied until extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Cairn scored twice to make it 4-2 but the Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame.  Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) drew a one-out walk before Parker Seachrist (Effingham, Ill./Effingham) doubled to score him.  Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) singled back up the middle to bring Sam Peterson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin), who pinch-ran for Seachrist, to third and he scored on a wild pitch to tie it with one out before Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) drew a walk.  Szafraniec then came up with runners on the corners and laid down a suicide squeeze to bring home Piersma for the walk-off win.

Philip Wall (Juneau, Alaska/IDEA) shut down the Highlanders over nine innings of work as he scattered five hits while only allowing one earned run.  He struck out nine while walking five but received a no-decision.  Andrew Simonson (Hudson, Wis./East Ridge) threw next before Bradley Spencer (Papillion, Neb./Papillion South) escaped the jam in the tenth and got his first victory of the season.
