Eagles Fall to Mighty Macs to Conclude Florida Trip

Northwestern fell twice to the Immaculata Mighty Macs on Friday morning as they wrapped up their spring trip with a record of 4-4.  The Mighty Macs won game one 14-4 and game two 4-2.

Game One
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) led off the bottom of the second with a double but was stranded there.  Immaculata pushed six runs across the dish in the third inning to take a lead that they would never relinquish.  The Eagles threatened again in the fourth as Lindow led off with another single, Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) walked, before both advanced on a wild pitch to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Neither runner scored, though, but the Eagles did the following inning.

In the top of the fifth, the Mighty Macs added two more runs to bring the score to 8-0 before the Eagles got on the board.  Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) hit a two-out triple and then Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) scored him when he reached via an error.  Immaculata responded once again by adding two more in the sixth and four more in the seventh after the Eagles fourth error of the game helped to prolong the inning.

Northwestern added three in the bottom of the seventh as Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) hit his second triple of the game to bring home Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) and Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) and Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) singled home Szafraniec to conclude the scoring.

Szafraniec was 2-3 with two triples, two runs, and two RBIs to lead the Eagles.  Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) went 3-4, Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) went 1-3 with a walk and an RBI, and Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) was 2-3 with a run scored.  Sam Ludzack (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) got the start on the mound and took his first loss of the season.  Dylan Ramberg (Harris, Minn./North Branch) threw two innings of relief before Payton Brown (Elk River, Minn./PACT Charter) and Holt Goodwin (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte) finished it off with an inning apiece.

Game Two

Immaculata scored three times in the bottom of the second after the inning began with an error.  The Eagles scored twice in the top of the third after Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) drew a one-out walk.  Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) doubled to deep left-center field to drive home Piersma and Guerin Szafraniec (Brighton, Colo./Brighton) doubled to right to score Morrell.  Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) then drew a walk before Lindow singled to load the bases but the inning ended with the bases still loaded.

Immaculata added an insurance run in the fourth as two errors contributed to the run and extended the lead to 4-2.  The Eagles threatened in the top of the seventh as Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) led off with a single.  Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby) reached via a fielder's choice and Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) drew a walk to make it first and second with two outs but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) was 1-3 with a run, an RBI, and walk and Chad Wakabayashi (Waipahu, Hawaii/Hanalani) was 1-2 with a walk as they were the only Eagles to reach base multiple times.  Morrell threw the six-inning complete game as he gave up one earned run, scattered three hits, and struck out two.  He took the hard-luck loss as he shut down the Mighty Macs offense.

The Eagles fly home with a 4-4 record in Florida with its next game scheduled for Friday at Reynolds Field vs. Presentation College.
