MENOMINEE, WIS. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team travelled across the border into Wisconsin to take on UW-Stout for a 7 p.m. contest. The Blue Devils were 4-1 coming into Tuesday night's contest, the Eagles 2-4. In a close, hard fought battle, the Eagles lost a tough game, 47-55.
First quarter began with a
Jordan Sauve (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) three pointer off of an assist from
Miranda Crenshaw (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview). Play went back and forth as each team took the lead. UW-Stout would go up by three with four minutes left before
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) would tie it up on a three pointer. UNW worked hard to tie up the score with strong offense.
The Blue Devils would start the second quarter on a seven point run.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) would break the run on a pair of free throws before a Sauve steal and basket that would cut the lead to three. Strong Eagles defense would shrink the Blue Devils lead to one before a Roberts bucket would put them ahead 19-18.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) put in a pair of free throws to go up by three. A
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) lay-up would put the Eagles up by 5. The Eagles held the Blue Devils to zero points for over five while the Eagles went on a 14 point run to tie and ultimately take the lead. UW-Stout would come back within one to end the half UNW 25, UW-Stout 24.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the half with 7 points for the Eagles while
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) pulled down 4 rebounds.
The Eagles would score the first points of the second half before UW-Stout would score six to go up by three.
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) scored a three to tie the game at 30 apiece. The score would remain tied for two and a half minutes through tough defense and turnovers on both sides.
Northwestern would score five to UW-Stouts three to go up by two with under three minutes left in the third. With scores going back and forth yet again, Stout was able to go up by five before two DeKam free throws. The third quarter ended 39-42, Blue Devils.
UW-Stout would score the first bucket of the fourth to go up by five.
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) scored two in the paint before a pair of Blue Devil free throws. Landers made a turnaround jumper before a Stout fast break bucket.
With under five minutes to play UW-Stout made two free throws to go up by seven.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) put up a floater to cut the lead to five. With a timeout and three and a half minutes left to play,
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) would make a pair of free throws to come within three of the Blue Devils. Stout would make a jumper as well as two free throws before a UNW timeout with 24 seconds left.
Seconds ran out as the Eagles fell to the Blue Devils 47-55.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the Eagles with 14 points, 6 rebounds and
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) scored 9 with 6 rebounds.
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) added 7 points and
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) finished the night with 8 rebounds.
The Lady Eagles come back to action in the Ericksen center on Dec. 4 for their conference opener against Crown. It will be a double header as UNW men's basketball team will play at 5:30 p.m. and the women at 7:15 p.m.
